Cameron Parish Library Dedication, February 26, 2007

After Hurricane Rita’s devastation left no safe area for the children of Cameron Parish’s east side to gather and play, Cameron LNG and the Cameron Library began a project to provide that fun and safe play area. In late February, work was completed on the new the Cameron Library community park, which provides a safe place for the children and has the added bonus of enhancing the area around the library. On February 26, Cameron LNG terminal manager Randy Oakley joined parish and state officials to officially dedicate the park at a special ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Calcasieu Lake Debris Clean-up, August 26, 2006

In partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Lake Charles Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) and the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program at LSU, Cameron LNG is helping to underwrite a marine debris removal project at Calcasieu Lake. Hurricane Rita scattered debris throughout the Lake’s estuary system, creating hazards for recreational and commercial boaters. Before this debris can be removed, it must be located, marked and mapped. Volunteers and boats are needed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Calcasieu Point Landing in Lake Charles. For more information visit www.laseagrant.org/debris.

Local businesses contribute to the celebration by helping to underwrite and fill up goodie bags. Children of all ages take part in events that include cookie decorating, craft making and a holiday sing. The event was especially meaningful as we included both the communities of Hackberry and Johnson Bayou after Hurricane Rita’s damage.

Hackberry School Physical Education Program/Gym Restoration, December 8, 2005

Out of the five schools that make up the Cameron Parish Independent School District, only one--Hackberry School--was left somewhat intact after the damage caused by Hurricane Rita. Although “still standing,” the school did sustain major damage to its physical education facilities. Cameron LNG provided a grant to help restore the main gym and some of its facilities so that P.E. classes could resume at the school.
