| Tips to Stay Healthy During Flu Season
Flu season runs from November through May each year, with the height of the season occurring during the month of March.
The single best way to prevent the seasonal flu is to get your annual flu shot, but here are some additional tips to keep you and those around you happy and healthy in 2008:
- Avoid close contact with those who are ill.
- Stay home and rest when you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Wash your hands often to prevent the spread of germs.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to prevent the spread of germs.
- Practice other good health habits like getting enough sleep, eating right, exercising and avoiding stress to boost your immune system.
- If you missed the flu clinic sponsored by Cameron LNG, don’t worry, Hackberry Clinic still has shots available for local residents.

According to the Center for Disease Control, each year between five percent
and 20 percent of Americans get the flu, but thanks to Cameron LNG and West
Calcasieu Cameron Hospital Foundation (WCCHF), many Cameron Parish residents
are starting the year on a healthy note.
Cameron LNG sponsored flu shots at the Hackberry Clinic over the holidays
in partnership with WCCHF. More than 150 Cameron parish residents took advantage
of the free flu shot clinic and another 50 Hackberry School students were
vaccinated through the Vaccines for Children program.
“We appreciate the continued investment that Sempra Energy has made
in our Hackberry Rural Health Clinic,” says Bill Hankins, WCCHF CEO. “From
the provision of a trailer immediately after Hurricane Rita to use as a
temporary clinic site to quickly re-establish healthcare to Cameron Parish
residents, to the recent sponsorship of flu shot clinics at the end of 2007.
“Their partnership in ongoing joint ventures has brought positive
results for the health of individuals in that part of our service district
and Cameron Parish.”
By providing free flu shots through the clinic, the hospital hopes to decrease
influenza cases in Hackberry. However, even with the vaccination, individuals
must be cautious to prevent the spread of germs that can trigger the illness.
Julie Galley, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse for the WCCH advises individuals
who think they might have the flu to have a Rapid Flu test. If the illness
is detected early enough — within 2 days of symptoms or exposure — certain
medications can be prescribed to aid in a speed recovery. |
