Community pitches its trash to keep Hackberry clean

Keeping Hackberry clean is a priority for the local 4-H club and it was evident on November 17 when more than 100 Hackberry residents pitched in to support the club’s annual Fall Trash Bash.

“This was the best trash bash ever,” said 4-H club sponsor Margaret Shove. “By removing the litter and debris along our roads we are demonstrating our pride in this community and teaching our students responsibility for their environment.”
Most of the trash collected is a result of highway littering by careless motorists. Shove feels that having the students actively participate in the cleanup teaches them the impact littering can have on Louisiana’s wetlands and roadways.

After the cleanup along Highway 27 and 390, participants gathered at the Hackberry Community Center for a lunch provided by Cameron LNG. Additionally, over half of the Trash Bash participants took home prizes donated by the event sponsors.

“As a company committed to the environment, Cameron LNG is proud to partner with the 4-H club to do our part in keeping this community clean.” said Cameron LNG plant manager Randy Oakley. “This event allows us to do something positive for the community, and gives us the opportunity to reconnect with some of our neighbors to make this a better place to work and live.”

The next Hackberry Trash Bash will be on April 12, 2008.
