Louisiana Governor Kathleen
Blanco joined Sempra Energy
executives Neal Schmale and Darcel
Hulse on June 28, 2006, for a tour of the
Cameron LNG terminal site.
Following the tour, the governor
joined the Cameron LNG team and
approximately 150 elected officials,
community and business leaders, and
local schoolchildren from throughout
Cameron and Calcasieu parishes for a
community event to rededicate the
Hackberry Recreation Center.
Blanco praises local efforts
"It meant a great deal to have
Governor Blanco join us for this celebration
and see the investment being
made in Cameron Parish and southwest
Louisiana," says Schmale,
Sempra Energy's president and chief
operating officer. "What was even
more meaningful was the governor's
acknowledgement of the work that
has already been done by local leadership
and Cameron LNG to help jumpstart
these communities after the devastation
caused by Hurricane Rita."
Joined by youth from Hackberry,
Hulse presented the governor with a
framed photo that included colorful
handprints from the children of
Hackberry. "We are thrilled to be part
of the fabric of this community," said
Hulse, president of Sempra LNG, the
Sempra Energy subsidiary developing
the Cameron LNG project. "This gift
memorializes the spirit and resiliency
of this community and represents the
hands that will help to build the
future of this region."
Hulse also presented the Hackberry
Recreation Center board with a
$50,000 contribution to continue the
repairs to the facility.
Pool reopening draws more
than 500 families
"We couldn't have repaired and reopened
this facility without
the help of Cameron LNG
and Sempra Energy," says
Dwayne Sanner, executive
director of the Hackberry
Recreation Center. Not only
did the company provide a
monetary contribution, but
the manpower to make it all
happen. We never dreamed
that this facility could
reopen by this summer."
Initiated by Cameron
LNG's construction site manager, Alan
Zachary, and supported by the
construction contractor, Aker
Kvaerner/IHI
(AK/IHI), more than
50 employees over the course of six
weeks volunteered after work and on
weekends to clean up and repair the
recreation center facilities. "It was
really a team
effort with countless
hours volunteered by AK/IHI," says
Zachary.
To inaugurate the newly repaired
center, Cameron LNG also underwrote
a community festival—the First
Annual Hackberry Summer Splash.
More than 500 families from the
parish enjoyed the free food and fun.
