Environmental FAQ

What are the environmental impacts of an LNG terminal?

LNG terminals are low on environmental emissions. No significant liquid hydrocarbons are present at ambient temperature, which makes the potential for water or soil contamination unlikely. Emissions to air are low and limited to those that escape from equipment, seals, valves, etc. These will be minimized by adopting state-of-the-art equipment and operating practices. The terminal design and operation will comply with national environmental legislation and meet international standards.

Is LNG environmentally friendly?

Natural gas derived from LNG is the cleanest of all fossil fuels. When combusted, natural gas generates 20 percent less CO2 than conventional fuels. In addition, the gases generated during the burning of natural gas are virtually free of other emissions. Natural gas is non-toxic and non-corrosive.

What steps will be taken to limit environmental impacts?

Sempra LNG has worked to minimize the impacts and maximize the benefits that the project has upon the environment, both land and marine. To achieve this goal, a detailed Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has been carried out in keeping with national and international standards. The results of this study will make it possible to understand, mitigate or compensate for the direct and secondary impacts and maximize positive opportunities.
